Teaching Soft C and Soft G: Rules, Examples, and Classroom Activities

Soft C and Soft G are spelling patterns that often confuse students at first. Many children learn the hard sounds of C and G early on, so it can be surprising when those same letters suddenly make different sounds in words like city or giant.

Once students understand the pattern, however, these sounds become much easier to recognise while reading.


In the classroom, I’ve found that students learn these patterns best when they see them repeatedly in word work, reading practice, and short phonics activities.


What Are Soft C and Soft G?

The letters C and G can make two different sounds depending on the letters that follow them.

  • When C comes before E, I, or Y, it usually makes the soft /s/ sound.

  • When G comes before E, I, or Y, it usually makes the soft /j/ sound.


Teaching students this simple rule helps them predict the sound when they encounter unfamiliar words.

Introducing Soft C and Soft G

When introducing these patterns, it helps to begin by reminding students of the hard sounds they already know.

For example:

  • C in cat

  • G in go


Then introduce the idea that these letters sometimes make a different sound when followed by certain vowels.

I like to model a few examples and ask students to listen carefully for the sound change. Once they hear the difference, the pattern becomes much easier to recognise.
