Create a Board Game — Project-Based Learning Unit
Your students already love video games. Now they get to design one!
Every kid has argued about the rules of a board game. This time, they write them.
Create a Board Game is a complete, ready-to-teach project where students invent a game from nothing: the theme, the board, the pieces, the challenges, and a rulebook clear enough that another class can play it without asking a single question. Then they hand it over and find out whether it works.
That last part is where the learning hides. A game that isn't fair gets called out. Instructions that skip a step fall apart the moment someone else picks them up. Students write, test, revise and write again, because they have a reason to, not because you asked for a second draft.
Printable board templates, cards and game pieces mean every student finishes with a real game they can play.
No prep. No logins. Just open the slides, print the pages, and teach.
What's inside
Presentation slides for every stage, one idea per slide
Project Journal: printable student activity pages for every stage, from first idea to finished game. Print only the pages you need.
Printable board templates, cards, and game pieces
Going Further extensions: a math task, a research quest, and an advertising poster
An optional hands-on STEM build
A project rubric
A complete teacher guide with the full learning sequence
How it works
Students move through five stages: Brief, Investigate, Create, Improve, Share. It's the same structure used in every Sherbert Learning project, so your class learns the process once and carries it into the next unit.
Every page and stage is optional. Run a short version over four to six lessons, or stretch it across a term as a Friday afternoon unit. Whole class, small groups, pairs, or solo, it works however you teach.

The skills are hidden inside the fun. Students plan, write descriptively and persuasively, justify their decisions, give and use feedback, and work with the math behind their game.
